A Place In The Sun ... a place
where we've grown and become
ourselves. Now comes the time for
moving on, but not forgetting. Enclosed
in these pages are the goals we
achieved, trends we followed, and the
variety that marks the class of '81.
We hope this book will keep the
memories of Silver Lake alive and
shining.

A Special Individual

Imagine for a moment a large
school with its share of problems
and happiness, a school
divided into two campuses in
different towns. This is what
Mr. Douglass Coupe inherited when
he became the principal of
Silver Lake Regional High School in
our sophomore year. Although
this was his first year as principal,
he was by no means a stranger
to either the students or the
system. He had been the
headmaster of the Kingston
campus in our freshman year
and had seemed to know all of us
by name after the first week.

After he became principal, he
was faced with many problems
which required tact and
intelligence. Often these were
difficult and unpopular
decisions. In spite of this, Mr.
Coupe was able to maintain
good rapport with the faculty and
student body. Towards the end
of the '80 school year, however,
Mr. Coupe handed in his
resignation in order to rejoin the
counseling department of the
Kingston campus. Although almost
everyone was disappointed by
this decision he was respected all
the more for it.

Other principals coming to
Silver Lake will certainly have good
points of their own, but Mr.
Coupe left a hard act to follow.

There's a place in the sun . . .

Where there's hope for everyone

And before my life is done . . .

To: The Members of the
Class of 1981
The challenge facing each
individual member of the class, as
well as the class as a whole,
will be met with the utmost
confidence and a forthright
manner. Those of us in public life
have as our number one
priority a commitment to provide
for you the basic framework to
make rational and logical decisions
in the life ahead. Hopefully,
your formal education within our
School District provided you
with that background. Learning, as
we all know, never stops and
your graduation should not be
considered the end but just a
beginning. You should be reassured
that those of us within the
Silver Lake community will do
everything humanly possible to
assist In making this transition an
efficient and productive one.
My congratulations and best wishes
to all members of the
graduating class.

Paul A. Squarcia, Superintendent

TO THE CLASS OF 1981

I leave you with the five (5) rules of

success. They are:

1) Think greatly of your function —
your attitude about your role in

life is most important. You play the
key role.

2) Build the two vital success
factors — pride and
confidence — understand the
difference between doing
things right and doing the right
things.

3) Live by expectation — high
achievement always takes
place in the framework of high
expectation.

4) Make every occasion a great
occasion — strive for
excellence in everything you do. See
it big, do it right, and give it
class.

5) Believe in the "Great Law"
— honest, intelligent effort is
almost always rewarded, so
apply this law as absolute.
My personal best wishes for a
long, happy, successful life.
Albert F. Argenziano,
Dir.-Sec. Ed.

To: The Class of 1981

You the Class of 1981 are very
special to me. You represent my
first graduating class as
principal of Silver Lake. Your talent,
diversity and energy have
served as a constant reminder to
me of the potential that you
embody. May the knowledge that
you have gained help this
potential to be realized. May the
friendships that you have
shared be a source of joy and
happiness long after you have
left these halls. In extending to
each of you my warm and
sincere best wishes in all your
future endeavors, may each
place you go and each person's life
you touch be better because
you have been there.

Good luck and God speed.

Charles A. Napoli,
Principal

5hining On ' The Graduates

Sound of laughter, shades of

earth are
Ringing through my open view ■

inciting and inviting me.
Limitless, undying love which

shines around shines
around me like a

million suns,
it calls me on and on across

the universe.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE —
Lennon and McCartney

Like a roller in the ocean,

life's explosion
Move On
Like the wind that's always

blowing, life is

flowing.
Move On
Like the sunrise in the

morning, life is

dawning
Move on.

How I treasure every minute
Being part of, being in it,
With the urge to move on.

MOVE ON — ABBA

Shall +^7>mp^e thee-to a summer's, day?
Thouart more lovely and more tfemperate', <>
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,'
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines.
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer_ shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wand'rest i.n his shade.
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st: ' ■
So long as men can breathe or eyes^can see^
So long lives this and' this gives life Jo thee.

A long winding road I leave

behind.
Another world I've yet to
find.
Times of happiness,
Times of sorrow,
Times to be remembered in my
tomorrows.

Now

It's hard to
See ourselves —
We've changed
so much.
Who will we be?
Is growing up
Worth as much as
we think?
Entering a
New world
As quickly as
We leave the old one.
Friends
Come and go
Yet in a way
They remain —
Always stay in our
Hearts

Where will we be in
Twenty years?
Some day
We will look back
And wish

We had never wished
Now
Away.

T.G.I.F.!

Friday the thirteenth is
traditionally believed to be an
unlucky day. For the class of
'81, however, the thirteenth was
an exciting time because our
prom fell on that night.

Final exams had started the day
before. The tension caused by
the exams and the excitement of
the prom conflicted with each
other and created much confusion.
The special evening took place
at Christo's II in Brockton, our band
was Jerry Seeco, and the
theme was "All of My Love." A
long line for pictures caused us
to get a late start, but when
everyone was seated the
excitement began. Mr. Coupe
brightened up our night with
his hot pink pants, and, later,
Deidre Maki was chosen to be
our queen. Out on the dance floor,
everyone was brought close by
the music and the lack of space.
Moreover, the building of a
pyramid of glasses added sparkle to
the evening we all shared.
Mythically, this night of Friday the
thirteenth is believed to be
unlucky, but our memories tell us
that it certainly was not.

Star Track

The Silver Lake girls' track
team has long been a top
contender in the O.C.L. In
1980, Silver Lake finished in a
three-way tie for first place
with Hingham and Scituate and
placed second in the South
Shore Invitational Meet. In addition,
the girls had four places in the
Class B State Meet. Two of these
were due to the outstanding
performances of Patty Burke and
Jennifer Cronin in the javelin
throw. At the All-State, again
Jennifer and Patty took two of
the three Silver Lake places in the
meet.

Further evidence of this team's
strength came when Jennifer
Cronin and Moira Teevens placed
second in New England.

On The Right Track

The 1980 boys' track team
was led by some superior athletes.
Paul Kandola, a high scoring
senior, finished 4th in the all-state
championships in the discus.
He set a school record of 156' 7".
Mark Ward, the top sprinter of
the team, finished 4th in the South
Shore championships; and
Manny Fernandez rose to a 5th
place finish in the class A
division of the eastern Mass.
championship in the discus
throw. Overall, the team finished
with an exceptional season of
6 wins and 3 losses.

The 1980 baseball season
gave the team an opportunity to
develop its new players, the
majority playing their first year of
varsity baseball.

The starting season was rather
sluggish, but as the team got into
the full swing of games, the
players came through with some
outstanding fielding and hitting.
Also, the pitching staff was
surprisingly stronger than had
been expected.

The team played very well together
and is looking forward to a
stronger and more successful 1981

After having experienced a
great deal of success as a totally
underclassman team in 1979,
the 1980 Softball team, (led by
Captains Paula Joyce, Fran
O'Donoghue, and Liz Donegan),
became the Old Colony League
champions for the fourth straight
year with another 1 7-2 regular
season record.

The highlights of the season were
stellar pitching by Michelle
Agnew, (13-0 in league play), a
team batting average of .423,
and the selection of Agnew, Joyce,
O'Donoghue, Donegan, Diane
Gillen, and Sue Morse as All Stars.

This year's team will see Fran,
Paula, Liz, Terry Landry, and
Debby Tominy graduate. After two
years with the same captains
leading the way for this Softball
"family," replacing them will
be most difficult.

Although the boys' tennis team had
a disappointing '80 season, the future
iooi^s brighter with Joe Balboni and
Pat O'Donoghue returning. The team got
off to a late start because of the
inability to find a coach until a week
before the season started. This year,
the team is expecting a better record as
members begin the season with a
more experienced team and a dedicated
coach.

Despite some minor setbacks, '80
was a good season for the girls' tennis
team due to the enthusiasm of Coach
Branton and key players. Pauline Donovan
was the outstanding singles player.
Sue Bernier, although burdened by an
early season injury, finished as the
#4 singles player. Capt. Karen Kroon
provided leadership for this spirited
team.

The 1980 Silver Lake football

school's history that the grid
team finished with an undefeated
season. Not only did they win
the Old Colony League title, but
they also captured the Division
III state title in the Superbowl at
Boston University's Nickerson
Field. The 1980 Lakers also set a
new school record with 26
pass interceptions.

Special recognition was given to
veteran coach, John MontosI,
and to the six players who were
named to the O.C.L. All-Star
squad. The All Stars were led by
Tim Teevens and included Tim

A Winning Day

This year's seniors decided to
make Homecoming something
special. Despite the many
obstacles — finding places to make
floats, taking SAT's that
morning, opposing a top-rate
football team — the seniors
overcame them all, and the day
was a spectacular one.

The festivities began with a
gala float parade, featuring
creations from each of the four
classes, plus a Math Club original.
After the parade, the
Homecoming court was presented,
followed by the announcement
of the queen, Maura McGrath, and
the King, Pat Earner. Maura
and Pat were each given a small
pewter cup, and the Junior
Class, who won the float contest,
was given a Revere bowl.

The opening celebrations over,
the game — S.L. vs. Scituate
began. And, in keeping with its
grand commencement, the day
ended on an upbeat: Silver
Lake won 29-6.

And Still O.C.L Champions!

With only four returning varsity
starters, the reigning Old Colony
League Champion field hockey
title holders had not been expected
to be a strong team in the
1980 season. But the Silver Lake
team captured the league title
for the third consecutive year. Over
a period of three years, the
team has remained undefeated for
37 league games. This year the
Lakers were knocked out of the
state tournament in the first
round, ending the regular season
with a record of 10-0-2, and
one post season loss.

The 1980 season was extra special
because of the

accomplishments of senior, Terri
Galley. In her fourth year on
the varsity team, Terri broke two
national records. She set a new
record for having scored the most
goals in a single game when
she scored eleven of thirteen goals
against Randolph. The other
record was for scoring the highest
number of goals in a single
season. She scored forty-two,
breaking the old record by six
goals.

The success of the team and Terri's
personal achievements made
the season a memorable one for the
seniors. The hard work and
dedication from both the team and
the coach added another title
to the reputation of Silver Lake's
athletes.

team won the Dennis-Yarmouth

Fred Glennan. In the South Shore
meet the team placed fourth
with co-captains Fred Glennan and
Pat Baird finishing sixth and
seventh. Pat Baird was also a
member of the O.C.L. All-Star
team.

Although the soccer team finished
with a disappointing 4-10-2 record,
Coach Bill Johnson sees many
encouraging factors that he hopes will
continue next year. He notes that he
is losing only five players to graduation so
most players will have the varsity
experience which was needed so badly
this year. Coach Johnson worked
hard with the defense this year, a defense
that allowed only nine goals in the
last eight games of the season. The
coach also realizes the team's ability
to get up for the big games, noting that
S.L. was the only team to beat
League champion Rockland. Moreover,
S.L. placed two players on this year's
OCL All-Star team; defender Jim
Christmann and forward, Peter Brust.

was young and inexperienced, the
team managed to post an 11-5
season. Leading the team was
Captain Chipper Johnson who
had a good individual season with
only two losses, his only losses
since his sophomore year. Senior
Billy Winters also made an

The Drama Club's spring
production was a rollicking, rib-
tickling western called
DEADWOOD DICK. The plot
involved a hapless hero and his
horrendous misadventures. The cast
included Aimee Schmickel,
Elizabeth Lynch, Rick LeMoine,
Rose Foley, Donna Martz, and
many other cowboys and girls.
Aimed at the audience's corny
sense of humor, DEADWOOD DICK
landed right on target.

"Marriage and the Family": Take Four!

Sociology teachers, project originators, Mr. Tavares and Mr
Gerolamo mal<e a toast at the wedding reception.

Several "newlyweds" pose for wedding photos.

As WBZ-TV camera persons film them, Frank Castellano
and Donna Rogers begin the first of many stages in
this sociology project. Included before the project's
completion are preparing and budgeting a wedding:
furnishing an apartment: getting a job: preparing a
household budget: having "child" eggs: surviving the
'wheel of misfortune' (which could bring such things as
divorce, death, sudden illness): and planning for
retirement years.

Rev. Neil "Sandy " Sweet,
Jr. who performed the
ceremonies

The "hazards" of the reception: The groom fed the
bride the cake!

Meanwhile Back At The Ranch .

The Western Banquet was
another fun-filled extravaganza
produced by the Drama Club.
Hog calling, a pie eating contest,
square dancing, and even a
shootout between two ornery, low-
down critters were but a few
of the many activities presented
that evening.

With many new members and
a lot of enthusiasm, the marching
band completed quite a
successful season. In spite of the
suffocating heat at Boston's
350th Jubilee Parade and the icy
drizzle at the East Bridgewater
competition, the band marched on
and improved at each
performance. It also proudly
represented Silver Lake at the
Massachusetts Instrumental
Conductors' Association
Competition at Lov\/ell and improved
its score from last year by ten
points. The dedication and hard
work of the band members
truly paid off.

The Drama Club's production
of A Midsummer Night's Dream
brought Silver Lake its first
taste of Shakespeare. The cast
consisted of mostly
newcomers to the stage; however,
seniors Jim Fletcher, Bob
Lowe, John Welch, Eric Nelson,
Michael McCormack, Dan
Cullity, Jeff Anderson, and Donna
Martz did a fantastic job! The
Bard would have been proud.

Superb acting and professional-
caliber productions are not new
to the Drama Club. Under the
direction of Mr. McEwan, the
Club was a regional winner in the
1980 Mass. High School
Drama Guild Competition.

All my pictures seem to fade

to black and white
I'm growing tired and time

stands still before me
Frozen here on the ladder of

my life.

Too late to save myself from

falling
I took a chance and changed

your way of life.

Don't let the sun go down on

me
Although I've searched myself

it's always someone else

I see . . .
But losing everything is like

the sun going down on me.

DON'T LET THE SUN GO
